A few quotes and quips about dogs; some funny, some kinda sad.

Border Collies. These little cattle-herders, apart from their peculiar apptitude for driving sheep through hurdles where sheep don't want to go, have many pretty and endearing ways. I have never known any other dog who would sit hanging his head, in expectation of a scolding. Puzzling and idiosyncratic companions, I have come to the conclusion that they are a bit fey. It must be due to the Celtic strain in them. How much one wishes, sometimes, that one's dog could explain what is going on inside his head; and that he could tell one how often in spite of all one's love, one misunderstands him.
Victoria Sackville-West Faces

Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you
in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark
violently at nothing right in your ear.
Dave Barry

If there are no dogs in Heaven,
then when I die I want to go where they went.

Ever consider what they think of us? I mean, here we come back
from the grocery store with the most amazing haul - chicken, pork,
half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth.
Anne Tyler

God...sat down for a moment when the dog was finished in order to watch it...
and to know that it was good - that nothing was lacking, that it could not
have been made better.
Rainer Maria Rilke

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me). When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... whenever... where-ever - in case I need him. And I expect I will - as I always have. He is just my dog.
Gene Hill

I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.
Rita Rudner

In dog years I'm dead.

It did not take Man long, probably not more than a hundred centuries, to discover that all the animals except the dog were impossible around the house. One has but to spend a few days with an aardvark or llama, command a water buffalo to sit up and beg or try to housebreak a moose, to perceive how wisely Man set about his process of elimination and selection.
James Thurber

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.
Mark Twain

A boy can learn a lot from a dog: obedience, loyalty, and the importance of turning around three times before lying down.
Robert Benchley

Dogs believe they are human. Cats believe they are God.
